An Introduction to Brazilian Zouk History<\/strong><\/p>\n

*I am not Brazilian, I didn\u2019t live through this time* This article is a short summary of my notes from the excellent course on Brazilian Zouk dance history from Gui Prada and Alisson Sandi at District Zouk. If you want to know about this in much more detail, I recommend getting their course at the District Zouk website \u2013 http:\/\/www.districtzouk.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Brazilian Zouk is a relatively young partner dance from the late 90\u2019s\/early 2000\u2019s. Although the dance is often referred to just as \u201cZouk\u201d, it should be called Brazilian Zouk to differentiate it from Zouk, which is the name of the music and dance from Guadeloupe and Martinique.<\/p>\n

Brazilian Zouk evolved from an earlier Brazilian dance called lambada, which itself evolved mainly from older dances Maxixe (from African slaves in Rio de Janeiro) and Carimbo (from indigenous culture in the north of Brazil, influenced by Portuguese culture and African slaves).\u00a0 Maxixe and Carimbo made their way to Bahia, a northeast region of Brazil, where they evolved into a new partner dance which was eventually called lambada.\u00a0 It was very popular in Bahia, and when dancers from\u00a0 Rio de Janeiro and S\u00e3o Paulo found out about it, some of them, like Jaime Aroxa, went to learn it and then brought it back to their cities.\u00a0 Lambada was popular in the 80\u2019s and 90\u2019s, and for a while it seemed the whole country was crazy about it with music playing all the time everywhere, huge competitions, and tons of dance clubs, but it became too popular and then crashed. Clubs stopped playing lambada music, musicians stopped making it, and people mostly stopped dancing lambada.<\/p>\n

In the early 2000\u2019s, Renata Pe\u00e7anha and Adilio Porto worked in Jaime Aroxa\u2019s studio in Rio de Janeiro to adapt lambada to zouk, a music style from the French Caribbean islands Guadeloupe and Martinique. In fact, many people had already sometimes danced lambada to zouk music, so it was a natural change. This music style was slower and more relaxed, and while they used lambada as a base, they also mixed in elements from other dances like salsa and tango. Renata & Adilio created the fundamental steps of zouk and later started their own studio. Alex de Carvalho was also a part of Jaime Aroxa\u2019s studio and later went out on his own to start the Centro de Dan\u00e7a Alex de Carvalho.\u00a0 Many of the most influential zouk dancers and teachers were first taught in Renata\u2019s N\u00facleo de Dan\u00e7a or Centro de Dan\u00e7a Alex de Carvalho.<\/p>\n

The areas in Brazil where Brazilian Zouk is most active are Rio de Janeiro and S\u00e3o Paulo. Eventually, zouk dancers moved around the world and began to develop scenes in different countries. The dance is less well-known than salsa and bachata, but it has been getting bigger over the years, with more and more international events (pre-pandemic). Brazilian zouk is still popular in Brazil, but as of this writing (September 2020), pre-pandemic, the biggest zouk scenes are probably in Europe, with the US next.\u00a0 Asia\u2019s first zouk congress was in 2010 (Zouk SEA), and the scene is growing.\u00a0 There are zouk communities in Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, and China.<\/p>\n

Brazilian zouk is danced to many types of music besides Caribbean zouk nowadays, including kizomba, RnB, reggaeton, pop, and many, many more.\u00a0 The ability to dance to so many different kinds of music makes it possible for people with different musical tastes to enjoy Brazilian zouk, and as dance often evolves with music, various styles within the umbrella of Brazilian zouk have emerged. Today we have Rio Zouk (Traditional), Neo Zouk, Soul Zouk, Lambazouk and others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u5df4\u897fZouk\u662f2000\u5e74\u521d\u671f\u65b0\u8208\u7684\u96d9\u4eba\u821e,\u76f8\u8f03\u65bc\u5176\u4ed6\u793e\u4ea4\u821e(\u5982:Salsa, Bachata)\u662f\u4e00\u7a2e\u975e\u5e38\u65b0\u7684\u821e\u8e48,\u96d6\u7136\u6211\u5011\u591a\u7a31\u4e4b\u70baZouk, \u4f46\u5b8c\u6574\u7684\u8aaa\u6cd5\u61c9\u8a72\u70ba\u5df4\u897fZouk,\u5728\u65e9\u671fZouk\u5176\u5be6\u662f\u4e00\u7a2e\u66fe\u98a8\u884c\u65bc\u6cd5\u5c6c\u5b89\u5fb7\u5217\u65af\u7fa4\u5cf6(\u4e3b\u8981\u70ba\u74dc\u5fb7\u7f85\u666e\u548c\u99ac\u63d0\u5c3c\u514b\u5cf6)\u7684\u71b1\u5e36\u5cf6\u5dbc\u6d41\u884c\u97f3\u6a02,\u4e26\u4e0d\u662f\u5df4\u897f\u7684\u821e\u8e48,\u5f37\u8abf \u201c\u5df4\u897f\u201dZouk\u5c31\u662f\u70ba\u4e86\u548c\u539f\u672c\u7684\u71b1\u5e36\u5cf6\u5dbcZouk\u97f3\u6a02\u505a\u5340\u683c<\/p>\n

\u5df4\u897fZouk\u7684\u767c\u5c55\u662f\u5f9e\u9ecf\u5df4\u9054\u6cbf\u9769\u7684, \u9ecf\u5df4\u9054\u662f\u878d\u5408\u4e86Maxixe\u548cCarimbo(\u5df4\u897f\u5728\u8461\u8404\u7259\u6b96\u6c11\u6642\u671f\u548c\u7576\u6642\u5927\u91cf\u5f15\u9032\u975e\u6d32\u9ed1\u5974\u7684\u74b0\u5883\u4e0b,\u6587\u5316\u878d\u5408\u7522\u751f\u7684\u821e\u8e48),\u7576\u6642\u5728\u5df4\u897f\u5317\u90e8\u7684\u5df4\u4f0a\u4e9e\u5dde\u9020\u6210\u6d41\u884c,\u751a\u81f3\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u4f86\u81ea\u91cc\u7d04\u71b1\u5167\u76e7\u548c\u8056\u4fdd\u7f85\u7684\u821e\u8005\u7d1b\u7d1b\u8dd1\u53bb\u671d\u8056\u5b78\u7fd2\u4e26\u5e36\u56de\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u63a8\u5ee3,\u800cJaime Aroxa (Zouk\u5275\u59cb\u8005)\u5373\u662f\u5176\u4e2d\u4e4b\u4e00\u4f4d,\u65bc\u662f\u5f88\u5feb\u5730\u9ecf\u5df4\u9054\u572880-90\u5e74\u4ee3\u98a8\u970f\u6574\u500b\u5df4\u897f\u5f62\u6210\u4e00\u80a1\u98a8\u6f6e,\u5f88\u591a\u97f3\u6a02\u5bb6\u8207DJ\u5011\u5c07\u5176\u96fb\u5b50\u5316,\u52a0\u5165\u4e86\u5f88\u591a\u821e\u5ef3\u7248\u672c,\u65bc\u662f\u5404\u5927\u821e\u5ef3\u90fd\u5728\u653e\u9019\u985e\u97f3\u6a02,\u9084\u8209\u8fa6\u5f88\u591a\u6bd4\u8cfd,\u4f46\u56e0\u70ba\u6d41\u884c\u5730\u592a\u5feb,\u4f46\u71b1\u6f6e\u4e5f\u5f88\u5feb\u892a\u53bb,\u66b4\u8d77\u66b4\u843d,\u6240\u6709\u7684\u821e\u5ef3\u76f8\u7e7c\u63a8\u7ffb\u9019\u985e\u97f3\u6a02,\u5e02\u9762\u4e0a\u4e0d\u518d\u8cb6\u552e,\u5927\u5bb6\u4e5f\u4e0d\u518d\u8df3\u4e86<\/p>\n

2000\u5e74\u521d\u671f, Renata Pe\u00e7anha\u548cAdilio Porto\u66fe\u5728Jaime Aroxa\u5728\u91cc\u7d04\u7684\u821e\u8e48\u6559\u5ba4\u5de5\u4f5c,\u4e00\u8d77\u7814\u7a76\u5982\u4f55\u5c07\u9ecf\u5df4\u9054\u7684\u821e\u8e48\u878d\u5165Zouk\u7684\u97f3\u6a02,\u4f46\u4e8b\u5be6\u4e0a,\u7576\u6642\u5df2\u6709\u4e00\u4e9b\u4eba\u7528Zouk\u7684\u97f3\u6a02\u4f86\u8df3\u9ecf\u5df4\u9054\u4e86,\u6240\u4ee5\u9019\u6a23\u7684\u8f49\u8b8a\u662f\u52e2\u5728\u5fc5\u5f97\u7684,Zouk\u97f3\u6a02\u6bd4\u8f03\u6162\u8f03\u653e\u9b06,\u4ed6\u5011\u8a66\u8457\u7528\u9ecf\u5df4\u9054\u7684\u57fa\u672c\u821e\u6b65\u878d\u5165\u5176\u4ed6\u821e\u8e48\u5143\u7d20,\u5982: Salsa, tango. \u6700\u7d42Renata \u548cAdilio\u5275\u7acb\u4e86\u5df4\u897fZouk\u7684\u57fa\u672c\u6b65,\u4e5f\u53e6\u5275\u4e86\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u821e\u8e48\u5b78\u6821,\u800c\u540c\u671f\u7684\u821e\u8005\u9084\u6709Alex de Carvalho\u4e5f\u66fe\u662fJaime Aroxa\u6559\u5ba4\u7684\u5b78\u751f,\u4f46\u5f8c\u4f86\u4e5f\u81ea\u5df1\u958b\u4e86\u6559\u5ba4,\u57f9\u80b2\u51fa\u5f88\u591a\u51fa\u8272\u7684\u821e\u8005,\u73fe\u4eca\u5728\u7dda\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u77e5\u540d\u7684Zouk\u570b\u969b\u8001\u5e2b\u90fd\u66fe\u662fRenata\u6216Alex\u7684\u5b78\u751f<\/p>\n

\u96d6\u7136\u5df4\u897fZouk\u4e3b\u8981\u767c\u5c55\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u4e00\u76f4\u90fd\u5728\u91cc\u7d04\u548c\u8056\u4fdd\u7f85,\u4f46\u96a8\u8457\u5f88\u591a\u821e\u8005\u5011\u7684\u8208\u8d77\u5728\u4e16\u754c\u5230\u8655\u65c5\u884c\u63a8\u5ee3\u9019\u500b\u821e\u8e48,\u4f7f\u5f97\u9019\u500b\u821e\u7684\u65cf\u7fa4\u6108\u4f86\u6108\u591a\u5ee3,\u76ee\u524d\u5df4\u897f\u4ee5\u5916\u7684\u570b\u5bb6,\u6700\u5927\u7684\u65cf\u7fa4\u5206\u90e8\u5728\u6b50\u6d32,\u7f8e\u570b\u7b2c\u4e8c,\u4e9e\u6d32\u570b\u5bb6\u4e5f\u8da8\u4e4b\u82e5\u9da9,\u76ee\u524d\u4ecd\u5728\u6301\u7e8c\u6210\u9577\u4e2d,\u4e9e\u6d32\u7684\u7b2c\u4e00\u500bZouk congrss\u662f2010\u5728\u99ac\u4f86\u897f\u4e9e\u8209\u8fa6\u7684Zouk Sea<\/p>\n

\u96a8\u8457\u5b83\u7684\u591a\u5143\u767c\u5c55,\u5982\u4eca\u5df4\u897fZouk\u7528\u7684\u97f3\u6a02\u9664\u4e86\u50b3\u7d71\u7684Caribbean Zouk\u4ee5\u5916,\u4e5f\u5305\u62ecKizomba, RnB, reggaeton, pop,\u751a\u81f3\u66f4\u591a\u7a2e\u985e,\u4e5f\u5438\u5f15\u66f4\u591a\u4e0d\u540c\u97f3\u6a02\u65cf\u7fa4\u7684\u4eba\u5c0d\u8a72\u821e\u8e48\u6709\u8208\u8da3,\u4e5f\u4f7f\u5f97\u5df4\u897fZouk\u9019\u500b\u540d\u8a5e\u5206\u652f\u51fa\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u98a8\u683c\u7684Zouk,\u5982: Rio Zouk (Traditional), Neo Zouk, Soul Zouk, Lambazouk\u2026\u7b49\u7b49<\/p>\n
