When we start learning to dance Salsa, most of us are only hoping to be able to find the beat so we can stay on time. But if you pay attention to the music, you will find that Salsa is complex and contains many rhythms and instruments. In fact, Salsa music has a rich and interesting history, and many genres are incorporated into the umbrella of “Salsa”.
When you are dancing, do you actually know what kind of music you are dancing to? Have you heard of Son? How about Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Pachanga, Boogaloo, or Rumba? Learning about the roots of salsa music is a way to better understand the dance and deepen your appreciation for the culture it comes from. DJ Tienyu is a salsa music aficionado and has long studied the history of the music, and he has prepared a special 2 hour musical history presentation.
